History[]
- Main article: Dream SMP/History
The Dream Team (Dream, GeorgeNotFound, and Sapnap) created the Dream SMP, then called the Dream Team SMP, on April 24, 2020, to play on for leisure. Although many other people joined the server as well, there were only minor conflicts and no real storyline.
On July 4, 2020, TommyInnit joined the server, introducing the first storyline through a conflict over his prized music discs ("cat" and "mellohi"). This conflict continued until January 20, 2021, and created underlying tension throughout other arcs that would later be introduced.
On July 12, 2020, Wilbur Soot joined the server. He and Tommy founded the nation of L'Manberg, and its following War of Independence and rule was the focus on several further storylines. After the introduction of a planned story, new members began joining after major plot points. For example, both Technoblade and Ph1LzA joined after major conflicts.
The story continued to center around L'Manberg, particularly people interested in its preservation and destruction, until L'Manberg's destruction on January 6, 2021. The server then broke into several factions, including Snowchester (led by Tubbo), the Syndicate (led by Techno), and the Badlands (led by BadBoyHalo). During this time, Tommy and Tubbo put Dream in prison, where Dream revealed his ability to bring people and animals back to life, and a mysterious red growth known as the Egg began to expand across the server. As confrontation with the Egg continued, Quackity built the Las Nevadas casino, and on April 29, 2021, Wilbur was revived.
Additionally, Karl Jacobs created a series, Tales from the SMP, which explores stories in the server's past and future through his character's time-traveling abilities.
The scripted improvisation style of the server that Wilbur introduced has continued, with most characters in the SMP contributing to the expanding server lore. Recently, content creators have also been focusing more on the development of their own characters, and streams have become increasingly lore-based.
Many other guests have also appeared on the Dream SMP, either through members' accounts, through voice calls, or for only brief periods of time to collaborate with members for comedic content. These guests include Drista (Dream's younger sister), KSI, and Corpse Husband.
Writing[]
Tommy had a general idea of how the war over his discs, known as the Disc Saga, would go; however, most events were clearly improvised.
Soon after joining the server, Wilbur transitioned the storyline into scripted improvisation, where major plot points are planned beforehand and everything in between is improvised.[3][4] Although this began lightheartedly, Wilbur soon began writing the story with input from other creators, especially in regard to their respective characters.[5][6] For example, when asked about how he wrote the different characters, Wilbur stated:
"It depends person to person. Techno definitely wouldn't let me write him any differently but Tommy was pretty lenient in working alongside me as a character"[7]
Wilbur also wrote the characters into the story rather than shaped the story with the characters (i.e. the characters are pushed around by their circumstances instead of acting off their own ideals).[8] This writing style allowed the storyline to diverge from pre-planned plot points, introducing an element of unpredictability for the content creators and viewers. Wilbur gave the events of the Manberg Festival as an example:
"There were a lot of surprises and a lot of stuff changed as improv happened. One I'll give away was how Techno was NOT supposed to use a firework and murder Schlatt and Quackity in crossfire ahahah
"Ended up being pretty cool though and we rolled with it"[9]
Additionally, Wilbur drafted two alternate storylines for the results of the first L'Manberg election, neither of which came to pass fully.
As the head writer, Wilbur wrote the L'Manberg independence, Manberg, and Pogtopia arcs before stepping down on November 16, 2020 to focus on personal projects.[10][11]
Wilbur also introduced the three lives system, where each character has three canon lives before dying. Wilbur did not introduce this until after he stepped down; he did not write the story with this theory in mind. However, he made it canon after seeing a post about it on Reddit.[12] He then posted a list of characters' canon lives on December 4, 2020.[13] This system is now canon and guides the plot of the SMP.[14][15]
On December 3, 2020, Technoblade announced that he was writing the plot. Dream then clarified that Technoblade would be writing his own character's arc, while Dream, Quackity, and Tommy would be writing the main storyline with other members, including Wilbur, Fundy, and Tubbo, providing input.[16]
On January 30, 2021, Ranboo reaffirmed that the server was written through collaborative storytelling, where each creator works on their own character in separate storylines that occasionally merge for large events.[17] This is a shift from Wilbur's original writing style (from the story guiding the characters to the characters guiding the story).
After his character's revival on April 29, 2021, Wilbur announced that he was planning some lore for the future.[18] On May 14, Phil confirmed that Wilbur would return to writing the plot.[19]
