You Laugh You Lose, usually known as YLYL, is a popular challenge that streamers commonly attempt. The challenge revolves around stream viewers donating money to send videos through Mediashare and the streamer attempting not to laugh. Of the Sleepy Bois, Wilbur Soot has made 15 YLYL videos and TommyInnit has made 4. Currently, Tommy occasionally streams YLYL when with other content creators such as Tubbo and Ranboo.
Overview[]
A YLYL stream typically consists of just the streamer attempting not to laugh as viewers donate videos. The stream ends when:
- The streamer laughs, losing the challenge,
- The streamer does not laugh within a specific time (e.g. within two hours), winning the challenge, or
- The streamer does not laugh within a specific number of videos, winning the challenge.
Wilbur's You Laugh You Lose[]
Wilbur was the first person in the Sleepy Bois to make a YLYL video, "If I Laugh The Video Ends (ULTIMATE YLYL)", which was posted on his YouTube channel on November 11, 2019. These videos are a staple on his channel and have created numerous inside jokes and recurring content.
Wilbur often varies his YLYL content. In the past, he has given himself multiple lives, used a harmonica to determine whether or not he is laughing, and tried not to smile rather than laugh.
Wilbur has also created a YLYL video with fellow streamer Niki Nihachu, "If We Laugh, the Video Ends (ULTIMATE YLYL)", which was uploaded on September 1, 2020. This video is not included in his YLYL video playlist.
Rules[]
After Wilbur deemed numerous videos of the same type "unfunny", he began making a list of rules against certain topics.[1] He often recites this list while doing the challenge.
- Rule #1: No boomers.
- Rule #2: No zoomers.
- Rule #3: No weebs, under penalty of death (I'm looking at you, Phil).[2][3]
- Rule #4: No Marvel Stans.
- Rule #5: Stan Loona.[4]
- Rule #6: No K-pop.[4]
- Rule #7: No My Little Pony; friendship is f*ck.[4]
- Rule #8: No videos we've already seen before.[5]
- Rule #9: Staged videos are sh*t.[3]
- Rule #10: Ignore Rule #5.[6]
- Rule #11: Loud is sometimes funny.[7]
- Rule #11a: Not funny.
- Rule #11b: Funny.[7]
Inside jokes and recurring videos[]
Some videos, most of which Wilbur considers funny, appear often in his YLYL videos. The most well-known of these is "xQc cheeto", which has made Wilbur lose the YLYL challenge three times. Others include: "Cat falls off wheelchair", stick bug, "DK, Chunky's Dead", "Siamang apes go wild", multiple variations of "Objects That I Have Shoved Up My Arse", videos from Tofu-Chan, and "Bouncing Seals".
Tommy's You Laugh You Lose[]
Tommy's first YLYL video, "mission: do not laugh", was posted on his YouTube channel on February 9, 2020. Of the four YLYL videos he made, he won three, losing only in the first video. Although he never made any rules, he mainly found loud and animal-related videos funny and skipped K-pop.
Like Wilbur, Tommy also made a video based on not smiling rather than laughing.
